Bluff Country Fossils
Fossil Hunting in Southeast Minnesota

Where to hunt fossils?

Anywhere you see rock!

You may not hunt fossils in state parks; or on private land without permission. Or quarries without permission!

The easiest way to hunt is to go for a drive and stop along side the road when you see a promising layered rock (not sandstone) cut, where SAFE to pull over!

Where do I go to hunt fossils? I usually go fairly close to home around Spring Valley. There are 4 wonderful sites within two miles of the tiny village of Fillmore, on County Roads 5 & 8. Masonic Park is always a good site. Love Hwy. 52 just below Fountain! And check out the restaurant in Fountain! Best pie you will ever eat! From Fountain to Preston there are maybe a dozen rock faces to check out.

We have 750 miles of trout fishing creeks and rivers in Bluff Country, all have the potential to yield fossils, prehistoric animal teeth and bones, and Indian artifacts!

What do I need to hunt fossils?

A sense of adventure and curiosity! Bring some kind of sturdy bag to carry your treasures in, perhaps a picnic lunch! I wear waterproof shoes because most of the roadside ditches are wet! The photo gallery in the upper right shows a number of items that I carry when fossil hunting!
